FAQ about Governing Boards

- from the Governing Board Handbook issued by CPC

What is Governing Board?

A Governing Board is a body established in each school according to the Education Act. It is composed of the parents, teachers, representatives of both the non-teaching professionals and support staff, day care and community representatives who work in partnership to ensure that all students receive the best possible learning opportunities. The school principal attends Governing Board meetings but is not entitled to vote.

What are the Functions of Governing Board?

The Governing Board exists to govern the school, not administer the daily operation of the school. The latter is the responsibility of the principal. The powers and functions of the Governing Board are related to four areas: general, educational services, material and financial resources and other.

Terms of Office

Parents hold a 2-year term. Teachers hold a 1-year term. Elections are held at the General Assembly of Parents which must be held before September 30th of each school year. If you are interested in volunteering for the Governing Board, please contact the Chairperson.
